Helen Kennedy Calathea 4in

Helen Kennedy Calathea 4in

Calathea ‘Helen Kennedy’ is a striking prayer plant grown for its large, velvety foliage. Its leaves are typically deep green with bold, creamy-white to silvery feathered variegation along the center and darker margins. Like other calatheas, the leaves fold upward in the evening, giving it the nickname “prayer plant.”

Care:

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and fade the variegation.
  • Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Water when the top 1–2 inches begin to dry. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible, as calatheas can be sensitive to minerals and chlorine.
  • Humidity: High humidity (60%+) is ideal. A humidifier or grouping with other plants helps prevent crispy edges.
  • Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect from drafts and temperatures below 60°F.
  • Soil: A chunky, well-draining mix that retains some moisture. An aroid-style mix with coco coir or peat, perlite, orchid bark, and a bit of compost works well.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength.

Pet safe? Yes! Like most calatheas, it is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
