Calathea ‘Northern Lights’ is a newer prayer plant cultivar prized for its luminous foliage. It features rich green leaves with silvery to lime-green feathering and contrasting darker veins, creating a glowing effect reminiscent of the aurora—hence the name “Northern Lights.” The undersides of the leaves are often a deep burgundy or purple.
Care:
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves and diminish the coloration.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently lightly moist. Water when the top inch of soil begins to dry, and avoid letting the plant sit in water.
- Humidity: Loves high humidity (60% or higher). A humidifier or pebble tray can help prevent brown leaf edges.
- Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep away from cold drafts and heating vents.
- Soil: A moisture-retentive but well-draining mix, such as coco coir or peat with perlite and orchid bark.
- Fertilizer: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength.
Pet safe? Yes! Like other calatheas, it is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs.
