Common name: Stephania Erecta
Botanical name: Stephania erecta
Stephania erecta is a unique caudiciform plant grown for its large exposed caudex and delicate vine covered in round, lily pad-like leaves. Native to Thailand, it undergoes periods of dormancy and active growth, making it an intriguing plant for collectors.
Light: Bright indirect light. A few hours of gentle morning sun is beneficial.
Water: Water when the soil is mostly dry during active growth. When dormant and leafless, water very sparingly to prevent rot.
Humidity: Average household humidity is usually sufficient, though it appreciates moderate humidity.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures and should be protected from cold drafts and frost.
Soil: Fast-draining mix with excellent drainage. Many growers use a cactus mix amended with pumice or perlite.
Dormancy: It is normal for the vine and leaves to die back seasonally. The caudex remains alive and will produce new growth when conditions are favorable.
Pet safety: Not considered pet safe. Keep away from pets and children.
Fun fact: The exposed caudex is actually an underground storage organ in nature. Growers display it above the soil because of its unusual appearance, making each plant look like a living sculpture.
